R. R. Tolkien's fiction. Hobbits first appeared in the novel The Hobbit, where the main character, Bilbo Baggins, will be the titular hobbit. The book The Lord of the Rings contains more Hobbits as leading character types, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, as well as a few other minor hobbit characters. Hobbits are additionally briefly mentioned in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.
