Hobbits can be a imaginary diminutive human like race who dwell in the lands of Middle-earth in J. R. R. Tolkien's fiction. Hobbits first appeared in the novel The Hobbit, where the main character, Bilbo Baggins, will be the titular hobbit. The book The Lord of the Rings contains more Hobbits as leading character types, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, as well as a few other minor hobbit characters. Hobbits are additionally briefly mentioned in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.

As stated by the author in the prologue to The Lord of the Rings, Hobbits are "relatives" of the race of Men. Everywhere else Tolkien describes Hobbits like a "variety" or separate "branch" of people. Within the story, Hobbits and also other races seem conscious of the commonalities. Having said that, within the story, Hobbits considered themselves a separate people. During the time of the events in The Lord of the Rings, Hobbits shared a home in the Shire and in Bree in the north west of Middle-earth, though right at the end, some had moved out to the Tower Hills as well as Gondor and Rohan.
